A. B. Hashim, . (1996) Effect of different chemicals on the sucker induction of Salak Palm Salacca Glabrescencs. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Salak palm can be propagated by seed rhizome sucker and quartering technique. However the whole propagation processes are very slow that create problems for the expansion of salak industry. The potential of sucker as planting material and sucker induction techniques seem to be alternative. A study was carried out to determine the effect of sixteen chemicals on sucker induction of the palm at nursery stage. Chemicals used include hormones weedicides insecticids and other chemicals. The age of salak palm used in the study was 12 months old. For each of the chemical 0.2 ml were poured onto the salak palm after removing the shoot. The results showed that only diesel and methamidophos managed to induce sucker production of salak palm. However diesel seemed to be more effective easier and safer in handling as compared to methamidophos. Suckers induction occurred 2 months after application of chemicals. The number of sucker produced ranged from 5-10/palm.
