Abstract

Vanillin/HCI assay VHA butanol/HCl assay BHA and sodium sulphite-butanol/HCl assay SHA were used to compare the proanthocyanidins PA concentration of four Leucaena leucocephala species. The mean PA of all species was found to be higher with SHA 118.6 than the values obtained from VHA 110.2 and BHA 105.2 gkg- DM. Across genotype the PA content was positively correlated with OMD using the in vitro gas production GP technique. However similar relationship did not occur when compared between PA and GP. The latter requires further examination as to whether chemical structure and biological activity of PA were the affecting factors.
