Abstract

The effect of age on the tissue PUFA compositions of two species of freshwater fingerlings the Red Tilapia and the Catfish was investigated. Two hundred fingerlings per species reared in two separate 21 O-litre tanks were used in this three-month trial. The fish were fed a standard commercial diet and their tissue fatty acid compositions were determined sequentially at 30 45 60 and 75 days-old using gas chromatography. Both species of fingerlings had markedly different fatty acid profiles. Overall results showed that the absolute PUFA levels mg/g dry tissue increased with age. However the proportions of PUFA were actually declining as the fingerling grew when the PUFA levels were expressed as percentage over the total tissue fatty acids.
