Abstract

Thirty two Formosan sika deer FSD Cervus nippon taiouanus hinds 28 years old 1st 7th parities farmed in southern Taiwan 22.5N 120.5E were allotted to investigate reproductive characteristics including breeding months in age and breeding live body weight LBW calving month in the year and calving LBW and gestation days GD from the period of 1996 to 2003. The calving months were from June to October. The first breeding month in age and LBW were 17.1 1.5 months and 37.3 0.3 kg respectively. It appeared that the gestation days had significantly negative relationships with the breeding LBW both at first and second parities 224.1 0.1 days and 40.2 0.5 kg r -0.72 P0.01. In all of the parities observed the breeding LBW and calving LBW had significantly positive relationship 43.00.9 kg and 41.8 0.5 kg r0.35 P0.01 but not the relationship between GD 227.60.1 days and breeding LBW or between GD and calving LBW. Parity had no significant effect on the breeding LBW calving LBW and GD in FSD hinds in this study. When the hinds exhibited mating acceptance with higher LBW it appeared that they would have higher calving LBW.
