Abstract

Fleece characteristics have economic importance in sheep industry. In this study the effect of genotype sex birth year and type were assessed on fleece characteristics: fiber diameter FD variability of fiber diameter CVF staple length SL kemp percentage KP medullate fibers MF. Wool samples were taken from right midside of body in spring during three consecutive years 1999-2001 from 191 Arkharmerino x Ghezel ARG and 72 Arkharmerino x Moghani ARM crossbreds. The sheep were sampled in 9 to 15 months old. Sex had an effect on FD CVF and SL P0.05. Ewes had finner wool than rams. Birth year and type had a significant effect on SL p0.05. The sheep were born in 2001 had longer SL than the others and twins had finner wool than single types. The genotype-birth year interaction significantly affected CVF and SL P0.05. The wide variation in CVF KP and MF suggest potential for improvement of these economical traits.
