Abstract

Malaysia is very fortunate nation in which the biomass productivity is very high. The major biomass resources in Malaysia are wood residues agricultural residues animal residues wastewater and municipal wastes. Among these resources wood residues and agricultural residues have the best potential for renewable energy. Utilisation of these residues such as off cuts sawdust empty fruit bunch fiber rice straw rice husk oil palm log core and end cut are often difficult due to their uneven and troublesome characteristics. Apart from transportation storage and handling problems burning of these residues is often associated with very low thermal efficiency and widespread of pollution. The advantage that biomass has that it can be used as solid a liquid or a gaseous fuel. The garnering of knowledge in the densification provides a path to increase use of the resources. Briquette and pellets become an important renewable energy source in the future This paper discusses briefly some of the processes and technologies involved on the conversion of biomass into solid fuel.
