Abstract

The safety of trichlorfon against two beneficial insects found in the oil palm ecosystem was evaluated. Against the nymph and adult of the predatory bug Andrallus spinidens the residual contact effect lasted one to two days. The residual contact effect against the adult of the oil palm pollinating weevil E. kamerunicus was also short. Trichlorfon had no effect on the eggs of Elaeidobius kamerunicus. However larvae and adults of E. kamerunicus fed treated male florets experienced high mortality rates. It was concluded that trichlorfon is suitable for use oil palm pest management but care should be taken to avoid spraying the male inflorescence at the stage when it is being used as a source of food and shelter by E. kamerunicus.
