Abstract

Glyphosate is widely used for weed control in oil palm cultivation. It is forecasted that glyphosate application in oil palm plantation will increase from 7.7 million litres in 1998 to 11.9 million litres in 2020. A method for glyphosate determination in oil matrix has been developed. The method involved extracting the residue from oil using chloroform cation exchange clean-up derivatization using 9-fluorenyl methy1chloroformate followed by high performance liquid chromatographic analysis using fluorescence detector. The recovery of glyphosate from spiked oil samples ranged from 68.5 to 101.1 for levels between 0.05mg/g to 1.00mg/g. The estimated limit of detection was 0.02 mg/g.
