Abstract

About 23 000 hectares of coconut and nipah palms in Kuching and Samarahan Districts in 1996 were affected by the coconut leaf miner. This outbreak was a new phenomenon in Sarawak. Damage was caused by the feeding activities of both the adult beetle and the larva on the leaves. Large scale clearing of nipah forest during the dry weather were the likely causes of the outbreak. Aerial spraying with trichlorfon fogging of nipah forest with propoxur and trunk injection of coconut palms with monocrotophos were carried out to contain and control the pest. Regular monitoring indicated that the pest population in most of the affected areas was low. Biological control using the indigenous parasitoids and entomopathogenous fungi were looked into for long term control measures.
