Abstract

Effect of seed size on germination and seedling growth of Oil Palm hybrids were investigated. A Significant difference in shell thickness was observed among different hybrid combinations. Among 22 hybrids tested 1140 Dura D x 2277 Pisifera P showed maximum difference between big and small for length and circumference. Minimum length was observed in 519 D x 2326 P for small seeds. Seed size was positively correlated with germination and related parameters. Big seeds from majority of the combinations tested put forth early germination and produced more vigorous seedlings that had high leaves production fresh and dry mass. Big size seeds of 1504 D x 2326 P 1110 D x 2326 P 778 D x 2310 P 1762 D x 2326 P and 1504 D x 2310 P showed 60 germination. Similarly small sized seeds showed poor germination in majority of the hybrids.
