Abstract
Conventional liquid culture of cells is limited by the size of flasks and shakers. For scaling-up purposes a bioreactor is usually used. This system is expensive and most bioreactors have different devices for agitation and aeration. To address these issues the two-in-one MPOB Simple Impeller 2-in-1 MoSLIM was developed to provide simultaneous aeration and agitation two-in-one of liquid cultures. Observations revealed that the fresh weight increment of about three-to five-fold was obtained for cultures from five oil palm clones multiplied for 30-40 days in the 2-in-1 MoSLIM system. The usefulness of the MoSLIM is not solely on the rate of multiplication or proliferation of cultures but on the convenience of the system compared to the conventional maintenance of cultures in individual shake flasks. Multiplication of cultures in the 2-in-1 MoSLIM does not require any shaker or ample space. This system uses a simple impeller and pump for agitation and aeration purposes. A cheaper stirring bar inserted within perforated silicon tubing was used. Agitation and aeration could then be done simultaneously 2-in 1 system. Since it can cater larger to a larger working volume e.g. 300 ml to 700 ml more cultures can be multiplied in the system. This new system can be applied to the liquid culture system of any crop with a potential towards automation.
