Abstract

Oryctes rhinoceros is a major pest in oil palm plantations especially in replanting area. Today the utilization of aggregation pheromone ethyl-4-methyl octanoate is the best of this pest control management. Generally pheromone is put inside the pail of 25 I capacity which is put at a height of 2.5 m on bamboo poles or PVC pipe of 6 inches diameters and 2 m of length which is plant in the land. The pail pherotrap is twice cheaper than PVC piped but the beetle catched is twice more in PVC pipe than the pail. This research is aim to increase the beetle catched on pherotrap with reducing the cost of pherotrap and observation difficulty level. The research result showed that the application PVC pipe of 5 inches diameters and 1 m of length and put at a height of 2.5 m on bamboo poles can catches the rhinoceros beetle as many as PVC pipe of 6 inches diameters and 2 m of length or twice more than the pail pherotraps. This pherotrap design has the cost value at 67 500 rupiahs as same as the cost value of the pail pherotraps. The rhinoceros beetles were catched relativity increase in first month and then decrease at next month. The ratio of rhinoceros beetles had catched until 3 month of observation on male and female is 29.55 : 70.45 respectively.
