Abstract

Water is a very important factor in all-living organisms. The failure to have enough water will disturb the function of cell in organisms. The lack of adequate moisture leading to water stress is a common occurrence in rain fed areas brought infrequent rains and poor irrigation. This study was conducted under protected environment to determine effect of drought on physiological and biochemical changes in rice cultivar MR84 and Jawi Lanjut. Three treatments used in this study were flooded as control field capacity and water stress. Parameters used in these studies are stomata conductance photosynthesis and peroxides contents. Experimental result showed that stomata conductance and photosynthesis was significantly low under water stress compared to field capacity and flooded but significantly high in peroxides content for both of varieties. The experiment this indicated that the both varieties tested was tolerant to water stress but jawi lanjut proved to be more tolerant compared to MR84.
