Abstract
Centella asiatica locally known as pegaga is a small perennial herb found in tropical and subtropical regions. It is popular as ulam in Malaysia and has been considered to contain medicinal properties. Some scientific studies using the plant extracts have shown positive effects on treatment of wounds burns and skin diseases. Four triterpenes namely asiaticoside asiatic acid madecassoside and madecassic acid are bioactive compounds that are present in the whole plant extract and therefore served as a bioactive marker for C. asiatica. Much effort has been to put to study the chemical properties of C. asiatica but very little on the effects of agronomic treatments on the chemical properties. A study was carried out to investigate the effect of organic manure and chemical fertilizer on growth and triterpenes content of C. asiatica. Chicken dung and chemical fertilizer were applied as treatments. The morphological growth and triterpenes content of the plants were compared.
