Abstract

Methanol extract of the Momordica charantia fruits was tested for its hypoglycemic activity. Diabetes mellitus was induced with alloxan 120 mg kg- b.w and the extracts 100 mg kg- b.w were orally administered daily for 14days to alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Daily administration of the methanol extract of M. charantia reduced the blood glucose levels significantly p 0.05 in treated rats compared to control. In addition the treated rats showed significant increase in their body weight following treatment. These results suggested that Momordica charantia fruits possess an antidiabetic principle and can be used for treatment of diabetes. Further studies are warranted to fractionate the active principle and to find out its exact mechanism of action.
