Abstract

The role of ethylene receptor ETRI gene in ethylene perception and ripening induction in papaya will be investigated. Using a tomato tETRI cDNA clone as probe we have isolated and partially sequenced a 2.6 kb papaya carETRI homolog from the library of ripening fruits. The deduced amino acid sequence of carETRI shares a high identity with ETRI clones from Passiflora edulis 75 Cucumis sativus 75 Citrus sinensis 73 Cucumis melo 73 and Lycopersicum esculentum 69. Northern blot analysis indicates that carETRI expression increased through the earlier stages of ripening and that the levels of the mRNA transcripts were markedly lower in developing and maturing fruits than in ripening fruits.
