Abstract

The ripening of chilli Capsicum annuum L. is brought about by many changes in gene expression. To understand how these changes affect the biochemistry and physiology of the fruit the specific genes involved have to be examined. In this study a cDNA library prepared from chilli fruit was differentially screened for ripening related clones using cDNA from unripe and ripe fruits. This has led to the isolation of 47 clones obtained in the primary screening. Following that 10 differentially expressed clones were isolated from the secondary screening. The partial sequences of four of these cDNAs were compared with database sequences and they showed homology to homeobox leucine zipper 0.6kb ornithine decarboxylase 1.6kb elongation factor EF-l 1.4kb and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase 1.8kb. These cDNA clones were designated as cUKMI0 cUKMll cUKMI2 and cUKM13 respectively.
