Abstract

A papaya clone coding for subtilisin-like protease has been isolated from a ripening papaya cDNA library. The expected amino acid sequence shared high homology with subtilisin-like protease gene from tomato which may be involved in specific proteolytic events which occur during development and/or pathogenic attack. Sequence comparisons showed alignment of the papaya clone to the middle part of the other subtilisins hence indicating truncation at the 5;-end of the pB2 clone. The predicted papaya subtilisin was also analyzed for several features common to the proteases of the subtilisin family including presence of the catalytic triad amino acids Asp His and Ser. A hydropathy plot also revealed presence of hydrophobic regions in the papaya clone.
