Abstract

Trentepholia belongs to one of the six genera in the order of Trentepholiales which is a widespread group of terrestrial green algae. They are filamentous algae which can be easily recognized due to the present of orange color carotenoid pigment. The algae are widespread in humid climate region and grow on various living and nonliving including oil palm. The subaerial green alga Trentepholia sp. was sampled from oil palm leaves and further characterized based on its morphological and molecular properties. The DNA sequence of the 18S RNA gene of the alga was indifferentiable between Trentepohlia annulata and Printzina lagenifera. The morphological criteria revealed closer match with P. lagenifera. The phylogenetic affinities of this species still remain poorly understood as Malaysia subaerial algae are still not sufficiently documented.
