Abstract

Rice blast disease caused by the fungus Magnaporthe grisea is one of the most devastating diseases of cultivated rice throughout the world. Plants are equipped with variety of mechanisms that enable them to defend themselves against pathogens. These defense responses include the hypersensitive response phytoalexin accumulation oxidative burst and an increased expression of defense-related genes The formation of these various chemical and physical barriers is induced by molecules called elicitors that are produced by the pathogens. In this research we have targeted the protein and glycoprotein elicitors derived from the pathogen itself Using MALDI-TOF and LC-MS analysis we have found the components of elicitor to be similar to lectin Concanavalin A and also a putative uncharacterized protein of M.grisea. Rice leaves were treated with elicitors and the volatiles were collected using solid-phase microextraction technique and analyzed using GC-MS. We identified monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes as volatiles induced by these elicitors in line with a previously done research using a different rice species and cultivar.
