Abstract

Escherichia coli is one of the most thoroughly studied bacterial species in the microbial world. Public health problem caused by E. coli has occurred in many countries. To date several types enterovirulent E. coli have been recognised as the aetiologic agents of various gastrointestinal infections in humans. The most commonly encountered are those belonging to the enterotoxigenic ETEC enteroinvasive EIEC enterohaemorrhagic EHEC and enteropathogenic EPEC subtypes. E. coli 0157 is a member of enterohemorrhagic E. coli EHEC and has been identified as the cause of several outbreaks and a public health concern worldwide. E. coli and E. coli 0157 were identified from selom Oenanthe stolonifera pegaga Centella asiatica beef chicken lamb buffalo ulam Raja Cosmos caudatus and tenggek burungEuodia redlevi. The bacteria were recovered using chromagenic agar. Isolated Escherichia coli and E. coli 0157 were further characterized by plasmid profiling and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction ERIC-PCR. A multiplex polymerase chain reaction PCR assays were developed to screen for the virulence genes contributing to the pathogenic E. coli.
