Abstract

Enterococcus is an emerging nosocomial pathogen with increasing prevalence in drug -esistance including vancomycin. Vancomycin Resistant Enteroccocus VRE can be found in healthcare settings and has been shown difficult to eliminate. In recent years phages are often considered as an alternative agent in controlling drug resistant bacterial infection and contamination. This study describes the screening of phages with the ability to infect local isolates of Enterococcus faecium which are resistant to vancomycin. Twelve phages which were isolated from various resources were found to exhibit lytic activity against the targeted bacterium.
