Abstract
A novel red pigmented Gram-negative short rod-shaped motile facultative anaerobic strain of Serratia was isolated from marine water of Port Dickson Negri Sembilan Malaysia. Primary screening results using disk diffusion assay revealed that the isolate possesses strong antibacterial activity against fungi Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. Optimum growth was obtained at 28 C pH 7 3 NaCI during 72h of incubation. Comparative 16SrRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the isolate shared 97 similarities with Serratia marcescens strain SPL2 IN 400353 Pseudomonas fluorescens strain PSY-11 Serratia nematodiphila strain DZ0503SBS1 S. marcescens subsp. sakuensis strain KRED Bacterium BR119 EU603510.1 and S. nematodiphila strain DZ0503SBSH1-2. Biochemical and morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis suggested that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Serratia.
