Abstract

Endophytic fungi were known to produce volatile organic compounds VOCs with antimicrobial effects. Muscodor albus is one of the novel endophytic fungus that produces a spectrum of biochemical compounds including VOCs which posses inhibitory properties against a wide range of pathogenic plant bacteria and fungi. The objective of this study is to screen for new endophytic fungi that exhibit antimicrobial VOCs from plants in Malay Peninsula. 16 specimens were taken from leaf stem and the root from 10 selected tree species. Isolates taken from three plant species namely Kaduk Medang Sintok and Kayu Manis were found to contain endophytic fungi that showed similarity in terms of the gross morphology smell and antimicrobial activities with M. albus. The antimicrobial assay showed that the three fungi isolated possess low inhibitory effects towards the test fungi but no inhibition towards bacteria. Molecular analysis by PCR techniques showed that the sizes of DNA for all three fungi were similar at around 828 bp. Based on this criteria the fungus was identified as Hypocrea lixii.
