Abstract

Plant based antimicrobial compounds has enormous therapeutic potential as they ca serve the purpose without any side effects that are often associated with synthetic antimicrobials. Therefore screening of folk medicinal plants for antimicrobial activities is important to evaluate the potential of new compounds for therapeutic use. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of Eupatorium odoratum leaves extracts for antimicrobial activity against human pathogenic microbes. The antimicrobial activity was tested against four types of common pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli Staphylococcus aureus Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi and fungal strains Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Aspergillus sp based on the disc diffusion method. Eupatorium odoratum showed variable antimicrobial effects against the bacteria and fungi tested using aqueous and methanol extractions.
