Abstract

Thirty nine biobutanol producers were successfully isolated from the soil samples Sekinchan from palm oil mill effluent waste in Felda Serting Hilir and hot springs in Selayang and Bentong Malaysia and their ability to produce biobutanol was evaluated. The isolate with the highest biobutanol production was bacterial isolate A3. The bacterial isolate had grown well at 37C in liquid and solid media with complete absence of oxygen. The colonies produced by the bacterium on reinforced clostria medium RCM agar were circular translucent and white in colour. Single cell of the bacterium was straight rods 0.6 to 2m diameter and motile. Identification through 16 S rRNA was performed and the bacterial isolate A3 was classified as Clostridium sporogenes with 99 similarities. From the batch fermentation using rice straw hydrolysate as a carbon source the concentration of biobutanol produced after 120 h of fermentation was 0.3 g/L.
