Abstract
The objective of the study was to determine the susceptibility of Arcobacter butzleri strains isolated from beef milk cattle and farm environment samples in Malaysia. The minimum inhibitory concentrations MICs were determined using Minimum Inhibitory Concentration Evaluator M.I.C.E; Oxoid for six antimicrobial agents including ampicillin ciprofloxacin erythromycin tetracycline cephotaxime and gentamicin. In total 27 Abutzleri strains were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. A butzleri strains were more resistant to erythromycin 55.55 followed by cefotaxime 48.14 and ampicillin 33.33 compared to the ciprofloxacin 22.22 and gentamicin 22.22 whereas they showed least resistance against tetracycline 7.4. Four isolates were sensitive to all six antibiotics but none of them were resistant against all six antibiotics tested. Ten 37.03 isolates showed multiple resistance to more than two antibiotics whereas none of the isolates showed resistance to all six antibiotics.
