Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria can become resistant to different types of antibiotics by mutation and transformation which are related to plasmids transposons and integerons. Horizontal gene transfer by mobile elements play an important role to spread particular genes between strains and species. Nowadays antibiotic resistant bacteria have been isolated from diverse environments and the spread of antibiotic resistance in pathogens and non-pathogens is a consequence of the unsystematic use of antibiotics. The aim of this study was to identify the lincosamide resistance gene in Lactobacillus plantarum PA18 isolated from a local plant. Plasmid analysis indicated that linA gene was borne by small-size plasmids ca. 3.2 kb and sequence analysis revealed that; The linA gene showed similarities to those identified in staphylococcal and lactobacillus plasmids. The detection of the same linA gene in different plasmid backbones suggested the exchange of the gene via interplasmid recombinational events.
