Abstract

Shorea leprosula from the Dipterocarpaceae family is widely found in the natural forests of Peninsular Malaysia Sumatra and Borneo. It can be propagated by cuttings and seed. In this study shoot explants from one-year-old saplings raised in the nursery were used as one of the initial sources of explants for sterilization experiments. Fungicide Benlate antibiotic streptomycin and antioxidant ascorbic acid were used in pretreatment prior to sterilization to reduce contamination and browning. Mature seeds were sterilized and germinated in vitro using Woody Plant Medium WPM. The shoots and cotyledonary nodes of these in vitro seedlings were used in multiplication study. It was observed that cotyledonary node explants gave the highest number of shoots with 4.4 M BAP 6-benzylaminopurine treatment.
