Nghia N. H., . (2003) Genecological inventories for four dipterocarp species of coastal sandy forest ecosystems in Vietnam. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
According to surveys in some provinces along the coast in Central and South Vietnam among almost 50 dipterocarp species there are 4 species that occur on coastal sandy soil and they play an important role in the rehabilitation of the forest ecosystems in sandy soil areas. They are Dipterocarpus chartaceus Hopea cordata Shorea roxburghii and S. falcata. Sandy dipterocarp D. chartaceus can be found in sandy soil areas along the coast from Phan Thiet town Binh Thuan Province to Ba Ria-Vung Tau in small populations from about dozens to hundreds of individuals. Generally sandy Shorea S. roxburghii occurs in moist evergreen and sandy soil forests such as in Takou Ecological Conservation Forest and Binh Chau Nature Reserve. The other two dipterocarps H. cordata and S. falcata are considered very rare species. Shorea falcata a large-sized tree species of up to 20 m height and 1 m diameter has been found in two areas 7 individuals in Cam Hai Dong Cam Ranh Khanh Hoa and 6 individuals in Xuan Hoa Phu Yen while H. cordata has been found only in Cam Hai Dong in a population of less than 200 individuals. These two species are classified as critically endangered CR according to IUCN 1994. Seeds have been collected and seedlings produced for planting in other areas for the conservation and development of plantations.
