Abstract

Hopea odorata is being widely planted as an ornamental tree particularly along roadsides and in parks due to its ability to grow fast with a magnificent crown form. Ecophysiological studies of this species under open environmental condition could contribute to a better understanding of its growth response. The diurnal course of net photosynthesis of 3-year-old H odorata saplings was examined. Light intensity was found to be the major factor influencing the diurnal changes in CO‚‚ exchange. The net photosynthetic rate of H. odorata was as high as reported for other fast-growing tree species in Malaysia. The rate was twice as high as that of H. odorata seedlings grown under glasshouse condition. The differences may be due to the different growth stages of the planting materials and the different conditions under which the plants were grown. The ability to improve their photosynthetic capacity in open area could be the strategy for good growth and survival.
