Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the levels of heavy metals Zn Ni Pb and Cu in the surface sediments of the Kuala Sepetang mangrove forest reserve Perak. Total of 87 samples were collected from the sheltered mangrove forest and sandy beach. The total heavy metals were analyzed using the aqua regia method. The mean concentrations of selected heavy metal was 106.00 mg/ kg Zn 23.25 mg/kg Ni 16.89 mg/kg Cu and 64.20 mg/kg Pb.A correlation analysis between total heavy metal concentrations and organic carbon in the sediments was also conducted. The results showed that there is no significance between total Zn and Cu concentrations and organic carbon in the samples p0.05 r 0.073 and -0.125 respectively. However Ni and Pb gave negative correlation p0.05 r -0.54 and -0.47 respectively.
