Silviculture management of dipterocarp plantation forest

Abstract

Research in Sarawak has clearly demonstrated that the illipe nut producing group of Shoreas locally known as engkabang can be successfully grown under plantation using the line planting technique. An analysis carried out on data obtained from the engkabang plots in Sarawak indicated that the planted forests have three times the growth rate of trees in primary forest and twice that of trees given improvement felling. The basal area was double that taken out of commercial forests during logging. Besides that there had not been any report of major insect pest or fungal disease problems in the engkabang plots. Major damage observed in the plots has been due to wind-throw.
