Abstract

This is the first time in Sarawak that a joint venture project between the Forest Department of Sarawak Timber Association Goodmatch Sendirian Berhad a private company and IRPA Intensified Research on Priority Area has been undertaken on the vegetative propagation research of Shorea macrophylla. The joint research is being conducted at the Sarawak Indigenous Tree Centre SITC in Tatau. about 40 km southwest of Bintulu town. Shorea macrophylla which is an important fast-growing timber species and endemic to Sarawak has been identified as one of the potential species for the state;s rehabilitation programme. Shorea macrophylla is known to be one of the most difficult to root among Shorea species. To date about 1.9 million hectares of logged-over forests in Sarawak have been licensed to private timber companies for the development into plantation forests. This paper describes the mass production of improved planting materials of S. macrophylIa by cuttings. It also highlights the problems encountered and suggestions are made to improve the survival rate and rooting percentage of the cuttings.
