Abstract

For export oriented commodities such as palm oil the problem of pests and diseases cannot be viewed in isolation because it can affect international cost competitiveness as well as revenue losses. In Malaysia the basal stem rot BSR caused by Ganoderma fungus is the most concern disease to the palm oil producers. The yield losses due to Ganoderma disease started from fresh fruit bunches FFB yield reduction and later to a total loss due death of the palm trees. Result indicated that FFB yield losses ranged from 0.2 at 10 years of planting and increase to 24 at 22 years of planting in the first generation of oil palm. The income losses were estimated between RM100.00 to RM2 500.00 per hectare. For second generation of oil palm planting without treatment the FFB yield losses up to 25 is estimated on the 16th year of planting which is the peak age of oil palms production.
