Abstract
The genus Curculigo belongs to the Hypoxidaceae family. It is represented by 52 known species around the world out of which approximately 20 species are exclusively of tropical origin. In Peninsular Malaysia most of the Curculigo species are found to produce a sweet protein known as curculin which exhibits tastemodifying activity. However not all Curculigo species found in Sarawak exhibit this property. Therefore the aim of this study is to determine if there are any genetic differences between Curculigo species in Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak. In this study sequences of two gene segments ITS and matK were obtained from 45 plant samples collected from Forest Research Institute Malaysia FRIM and several sites in Sarawak. Phylogenetic trees constructed based on the ITS and matK sequences showed that Curculigo species in Sarawak which exhibits taste modifying properties are closely related to Curculigo species from Peninsular Malaysia. Results from this study also showed that there are Curculigo species from Sarawak which are different from species found in Peninsular Malaysia.
