Abstract

Senna alata S. occidentalis and S. tara Leguminosae/Fabaceae are slightly woody herb which can be found throughout the warmer parts of the world. Traditionally they are used in reliable remedies for ringworm and other cutaneous diseases. In this study the infrared IR second derivative IR and two-dimensional correlation IR spectroscopy with thermal perturbation were applied to compare the three Senna species. The second derivative IR spectra could amplify the small differences of the three Senna species as compared to conventional IR spectra. In addition the visual synchronous contour and mesh plots obtained through thermal perturbation were able to enhance the discriminant analysis of the three Senna species more effectively. Consequently macroscopic IR fingerprinting can be used for herbal identification in the quality control of Senna species.
