Abstract

Molecular DNA technology is rapidly developing and is potentially applicable for the regulation of timber trade for endangered species and CITES-listed species including Ramin Gonystylus species. Currently the verification of the species and origin of the timber is done administratively without the use of advanced technology. This paper discusses the discovery of a unique DNA haplotype that is restricted to some areas in Sarawak and the possibility of using DNA technology for the tracking and tracing of timber species and origin.
