Abstract

In Malaysia the concept of integrated pest management IPM has been variously interpreted being governed by the individuals background or type of crop involved. Included are the many misconceptions such as equating it with having just a surveillance system an appropriate pesticide subsidy scheme or combining different pesticide inputs. There are those who believe that IPM could only be implemented when a large volume of knowledge has been accumulated while others think that IPM would eliminate the use of chemical pesticides. Another serious misconception is that IPM is suited only for perennial crops. Associated with such perceptions are implications that can be far-reaching. These are examined and discussed with respect to the pest management programmes in both perennial and annual cropping systems in Malaysia.
