Lim W.C., . (1984) The use of oil palm empty bunch wastes in the production of edible mushrooms. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
In the extraction of palm oil the fruitlets are first removed and the empty bunches which are considered as wastes are then incinerated for ash which is used as a potash suplement. Incerination destroys important plant nutrients. At present the industry produces about four million tonnes of bunch wastes per year. A review is given on the research to utilise the bunch wastes for the production of mushrooms as a food item. The spent compost can be used as an organic mulch and as a fertilizer supplement in oil palm estates or other agricultural areas. The addition of a mushroom farm next to an oil palm mill is proposed
