A high productivity fuel ethanol fermentation system

Abstract

The fermentation system is composed of two fermenters in series the first operated in a completely - mixed mode the second as an upward flow tubular fermenter which also allows settlement of cells which may be recycled to the first fermenter. The completely-mixed fermenter CSTF operates at the ethanol concentration such that fermentation rates are not severely limited by inhibition and the carbon dioxide is vented from the system. The performance of the second tower fermenter is not adversely affected by excessive gas production as found in single stage tower designs. Recycle of yeast from this tubular fermenter allows high 'productiveness' to be achieved in the CSTF due to the high cell concentrationthus maintained. High alcohol yields and concentrations are achieved in the plug-flow conditions of the second fermenter. Use of this fermentation system on a laboratory scale allowed ethanol productivities of three to four times the maxima achieved in single-stage CSTFs using a sucrose feed and a flocculent strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae
