Abstract

The frequent incidence of depressed and a marked volatility in the prices of industrialized crops coupled with higher demand for food crops arising from increasing affluence and rising population had resulted in greater attention being now paid to commercial food production in Malaysia. Commercial food production requires an efficient marketing system that would not negate the results of breakthroughs in more efficient production arising from the adoption of new technologies better farm management and cost reductions through scale economics. The greater potential for increasing income came from breakthroughs in productivity and improvement in the production side rather than from marketing improvements. However an efficient marketing system provides the threshold to ensure that such breakthroughs in productivity or improvement in production were not nullified. The impetus for greater commercial food production had to come from private sector with the adoption of modern technologies in production. Such production were market oriented in terms of meeting the specific requirements of the market. The development towards more commercial production helped to alleviate some of the marketing problems in Malaysia. Judicious Government intervention by way of providing the necessary incentives and facilities were required to mitigate the effects of the remaining problems. The National Agricultural Policy had spelled out the guidelines that would foster greater commercial production of food crops
