Abstract

The paper provides an overview of the extent of deforestation and degradation in the countries of the Asia and Pacific region identifies their causes analyses their ecological economic and social impacts and lastly discusses measures and recommendations for future actions. Data were obtained from country reports FAO/UNEP and other publications discussions observations and empirical research. Deforestation in the tropical countries of the ESCAP region occurs at 0.6 percent or 2.02 million ha per year. The process is expected to continue until the year 2000 due to increasing population pressure economic growth and rising demand for agricultural and forest products. The major causes of deforestation include logging fuelwood gathering and overgrazing shifting cultivation and agricultur0825al expansion. Deforestation influence the environment the economy and the social conditions of the people involved. Measures to curb deforestation are being undertaken in the forested areas the recently deforested areas and the old settled and cultivated areas. Recommendations include the need for multidisciplinary research the integration of socio-economic and cultural dimensions into forestry management plans acceleration of afforestation programmes strengthening the regional network of support institutions and experts and an effective participation and involvement of the rural communities in forestry managem
