Abstract

The importance of petroleum-based industries to the Malaysian economy has been significant since the early seventies. It is now one of the key industries in the economy. Its export ratio of oil has quadrupled to 16 percent in 1988 from 4 percent in 1974. Statistics show that the country is the next exporter of oil and gas and the net importer of petroleum products. This paper attempts to present the results of our empirical inquiry into the impact of increase in oil price to the economy. Using the inter-industry model the net effect of increase in the surplus of oil trade and in deficit of petroleum products trade is to provide potential expansion in output and employment
