Proposals for a small floating sago starch extraction unit

Abstract

The large scale extraction of starch from sago logs in urban areas presents several major problems which would be avoided by extracting the starch in the rural areas where sago is grown. However an extraction unit that uses conventional technology would have to be so large that it would create more problems than it would solve. Research has shown that overnight operation of a vacuum pump attached to a simple filter placed at the bottom of a bed of sedimented sago starch can efficiently dewater the bed. In several tests the dewatered starch contained less than 35 percent moisture and was found to remain in good condition for several months. If this laboratory technology can be applied commercially a system in which starch is extracted in quite small units should be possible. Ideas for equipping a small unit and for providing a suitable support system are presented
