Abstract

Leaflet diseases caused by Cercospora arachidicola and Phaeoisariopsis personata and rust caused by Puccinia arachidis are the main yield limiting factors factors in groudnut production. In a series of trials with Spanish groundnuts in the humid tropical countries Suriname and Indonesia these diseases were found to reduce yields by more than 50 percent. Losses resulted from reduced production/plant and because early harvest was required to prevent digging losses. Control of these diseases prolonged their productive life by at least one week and permitted harvest at a later stage that led to yield inceases of ca. 10 percent/week. Compared to non-treated more pods fully matured less were loss due to post maturity pod degeneration stage R9 and seed weights increased. Fungicides of the benzimidazole group gave good control of leafspots but these fungicides permitted severe damage from rust. Addition of dithiocarbamates for rust control was not fully effective. Chlorothalonil provided adequate control but if rust was severe the ergosterol-synthesis inhibitor bitertanol was superior. Experimental yields of over 4 t/ha were realized which compares favourably with yields in industrialized countries. Therefore leaf diseases control is considered as the most likely means to immediately improve groundnut production in the humid tropics
