Abstract

Fungicides are and are likely to remain in the foreseable future important tools for the management of many plant diseases. They are however vulnerable to the selection of resistant pathogens which may render them ineffective. A numbber of anti-resistance strategies have been successfully developed to delay the evolution of resistant pathogens thereby prolonging the useful life of a fungicide. Examples on tropical crops include the use of fungicide mixtures on peanuts and cucumbers the alternative use of fungicides with different modes of action on banana and limited application methods for example seed treatment on corn against downy mildew. Key elements of successful resistance management include resistance risk assessment sensitivity monitoring including development of appropriate sampling and testing procedures integrating resistance management into fungicide use strategies and close cooperation between industry advisory services and users. Practical considerations are discussed in this paper
