Abstract

The properties of Silwet non-ionic organosilicone surfactants are examined in relation to their ability to enhance spray effectiveness. The addition of Silwet L-77 can provide total wetting superior spreading and faster drying of spray droplets on leaf surfaces. In many cases uptake is enhanced largely through the ability of these solutions to infiltrate stomatal pores on leaf surfaces. This also provides much faster uptake increasing the rainfastness of the spray. Silwets have been found to be less phytotoxic than most other surfactants thus despite more rapid uptake translocation many be significantly increased. This is of significance to the systemic activity of herbicides. Studies to rationalise the behaviour and action of the Silwet surfactants are continuing. However sufficient information is available to enable this review and illustrate the utility of Silwets as adjuvants for herbicides.
