Abstract
Eleven economically important diseases of black pepper Piper nigrum L. are described with respect to their distribution symptomatology etiology epidemiology damage and control. Among these diseases seven infect the aerial parts while four damage the underground stem and root systems. Of the seven diseases of the aerial parts black berry inflicted by Colletotrichum capsici C. piperis and C. gloeosporioides is causing more than 50 percent crop loss in most cases rendering well-established farms uneconomic to maintain. Wrinkled leaf disease caused by a virus is threatening new pepper holdings stunting thousands of vines annualy. Pink disease Corticium salmonicolor thread blight Marasmiellus scandens horse hair blight Marasmius equirinis and velvet blight Septobasidium sp. increase chemical and labour input costs in production. The four major diseases of underground stem and root systems are Phytophthora foot rot Phytophthora capsici root-knot Meloidogyne incognita M javanica and M. arenaria white root Rigidoporus lignosus and slow decline of the influence of environmental features such as rainfall temperature soil water holding capacity soil pH and soil texture on the incidence development and spread of these disease. The contributions of factors like cultural practices vegetative behavior and cropping system to the epidemiology and control of these diseases are also discussed
