Abstract

Macaranga gigantea Mull. is one of the indigenous pioneer tree species in the tropics. Known for its long fibres and light coloured wood it has commercial possibilities as a source of timber for pulp paper and wood composite boards. A total of 60 trees were randomly selected from trees of DBH 10 cm to 50 cm representing the population. Total tree volume mechantable volume to a variable top diameter limit and taper functions were developed using SAS software. These volume functions can be used to facilitate planning and establishment of future M. gigantea plantation.
